morning, everyone, glad you're with us. i'm randi kaye. we start in alabama and the desperate waiting game for police and the parents of one little boy. the 5-year-old is being held underground for a fifth straight day while police wait outside his makeshift prison. negotiating with the person who grabbed him off a school bus earlier this week. my colleague victor blackwell is keeping an eye on the story and joins me now on the telephone. good morning. do they keep talking with this suspect throughout the night? >> reporter: well, from the latest we've received from local, state and federal investigators, this negotiating continues around the clock. now, what we do know what happened overnight was that the temperature, the temperature dipped below freezing for the first time during this ordeal, and we've learned from sources close to the negotiating process that they likely had heating in this bunker. so this -- the temperature was moderated overnight. but we have learned more about this potential relationship between this man who has the boy in the bunker and the man he shot on tuesday. w

, february 9th, good morning to everyone out there. i'm martin savage in for randi kaye and victor blackwell. here's what we know right now. the snow is relentless as it piles up. we're hearing this storm has claimed at least one life. police say someone has died in a storm-related crash in poughkeepsie in new york. meanwhile, the boston area slammed with hurricane-force winds and looks like connecticut is taking the brunt of the snow. more than 2 feet in some places and there is more to come. elsewhere, it is falling at a clip of 3 inches an hour. >>> hundreds of cars are stuck in the snow in the long island expressway and sunrise highway. the roads are closed on about everybody but emergency vehicles. police say that most people are resc rescued, but some are still stranded. we'll have an update in a few minutes. >>> and the blizzard has knocked out power to more than 650,000 homes and businesses across eight states. you can see that in a breakdown we've got for you here. winds gusting up to 70 miles an hour and that's tearing down tree limbs and when the limbs go down, they tend to drag t

morning, everyone. i'm deborah feyerick in for randi kaye. >>> los angeles police have a message for christopher dorner. >> we're all hoping dorner will turn himself in and the chief wants to reopen the case and he made a plea to dorner that he would turn himself in. and to be honest with you, that would be the best resolution for this local thing right now. no one else has to be shot or injured, no one else has to die. he can turn himself in anywhere and he'd be taken into custody and he'll be able to get his side of the story out. >> searchers are combing the snowy resort area of big bear lake east of los angeles where dorner's burned out truck was found abandoned thursday. they're also reopening the investigation into why dorner was fired from the lapd, the reason dorner says he's on this revenge killing spree. check out this video from an alley behind an auto parts store and you can see dorner's truck there and a man who appears to be dorner throw something stuff into a dumpster. the store's owner says the items were ammunition, military belt and a helmet, the video was from

morning, everyone. i'm deborah feyrick in for randi kaye. two big stories we're following. on the west most, new details on a suspected cop killer in southern california. on the east coast, recovery efforts under way in the aftermath of the monster blizzard. first, police plan to go door-to-door when they resume their search for accused triple killer christopher dorner in the area of big bear lake, california. a new surveillance video may provide key clues. let's go to paul vercammen at big bear lake. tell us about the surveillance video. what does it show? >> okay. that surveillance video was taken in the san diego area. it was from behind an auto parts store where there is an alley and dumpster. a man who appears to be dorner, his build, don't forget, almost unmistakable. six-feet tall, 270 pounds. this man throws some objects into the dumpster. later recovered, a magazine full of bullets, a military belt, a military helmet. and you can clearly see in the surveillance video, the truck that belonged to dorner this happened the morning after the murders in irvine, california, that dorn

of wildfire law enforcement has seen all too often. the latest now from randi kaye. >> reporter: day five of the manhunt and still no sign of christopher dorner. >> kind of scary because you don't know where he is, and we have friends that live all over the mountain, you know, and we're concerned about them. >> reporter: on big bear mountain, about 100 miles east of los angeles, 30 officers are back at it, this time expanding their hunt to more remote areas while continuing their door-to-door searches of vacation homes. authorities are hoping a $1 million reward offered for information leading to dorner's capture and conviction will help. though since it was announced, it has only led to more false sightings. this lowe's store in northridge was evacuated sunday night after someone thought they spotted dorner. we're also learning more about dorner's truck, which was recovered from big bear mountain last week. investigators say the axel on the truck was broken, which may be one reason why dorner lit it on fire. he may have had to quickly come up with a plan b. investigators also now say tha

'm randi kaye, glad you're with us. we begin this morning with news about the shooting death of a former nav former naval s.e.a.l. chris kyle was killed yesterday along with another person at a gun range near ft. worth, texas. local newspapers also confirm the death. wfaa reports a former marine suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder is being held in connection with the shootings. these are pictures of kyle taken from the security company kraft international. kyle recounted his four combat tours in iraq in his book "american sniper." his more than 150 sniper kills had them placing a bounty on his head. most recently he appeared on the reality show "stars earn stripes" and conan o'brien show. >> you were so well known by the iraqi insurgents that they put a $20,000 bounty on your head, is that right? >> yes, sir. >> how did the iraqi insurgents identify who you were? >> when i'd go into a house and we had occupied houses, i would take the top of my uniform off and just have my short sleeve shirt on and youed and see my tattoo coming down my arm and they identified that with me and s

you're having a great sunday so far. i'm susan hendricks in for randi kaye. thanks for starting your morning with us. we start with the latest on oscar pistorius. he isn't the only one in his family accused of killing someone. overnight we learned his brother is charged in the death of another woman. we spoke with carl pistorius' attorney from johannesburg. what did you learn from his attorney? >> reporter: you know, it's another bizarre twist in this oscar pistorius story. carl pistorius, who is oscar's older brother, charged with culpable homicide. his lawyer tells me in relation to an incident that happened in 2010 when carl pistorius collided with a woman on a motorcycle. we understand from the lawyer that this woman was injured immediately but she was taken to hospital and died silver days later. carl pistorius' lawyer telling us he has absolutely no doubt that mr. pistorius is innocent. he says there will be fighting these charges in court and that his client is going to be appearing in march, susan. >> makes you wonder if it will have any affect on his brother's hearing. i bel

to talk about what happened in court today. the 12 days of testimony, randi kaye was there. ran randi, a lot of focus on the car arias rented when she went to visit alexander. it's amazing the details that came out today and nancy is commenting on this. what was the prosecution trying to prove with the line of questioning? explain what happened in court today. >> well, they went at her on this rental car, and really, what they're trying to get at is p premeditation. they're trying to show that she planned to murder travis alexander. so they're trying to show that when she went to the rental car agency, they offered her a red rental car, and she told the agency, no, i don't want a red rental car because that attracts too many police officers. they also showed she filled up three gas cans in california so then when she did go to arizona where she said she never went that there wouldn't be any record or any receipt of her buying gasoline in arizona. and finally, they also showed that the license plate on the back of her rental car had been turned upside down, and the front license plate

of dorner's death. randi kaye is joining us. she just got word of the situation. she's in los angeles. the big headline is dorner died from a single gunshot wound to the head. does it mean it was self-inflicted? >> it appears so, chris. they didn't see him fire the fatal shot, but all indications are it was self-inflicted. they are still investigating, of course, but you have to remember that cabin was on fire. so law enforcement wasn't anywhere near him. they had that armored vehicle that was pulling the walls down during this. you also heard some chatter from the san bernardino county sheriff's department. we could hear on that chatter that was released, you could hear them saying, i think i just heard a single gunshot. was that a single gunshot? for all the people who thought he maybe died in the fire, maybe from smoke inhalation, it doesn't appear that's what happened. i can also tell you they recovered some weapons from his vehicle and also from the cabin. they showed some examples of those weapons today. just to give you an idea of what they recovered, they found assault weapons

, everyone. i'm randi kaye. it's 8:00 on the east coast. thanks so much for starting your morning with us. iraqi insurgents called him the devil. the this morning the former navy s.e.a.l. who wrote about making more than 150 sniper kills is dead. cnn has learned chris kyle was shot to death at a gun range near ft. worth, texas, yesterday along with another man. kyle is perhaps best known for penning the book, american sniper. it details his four combat tours in iraq. staerted a foundation to help veterans battling posttraumatic stress disorder. the gunman accused of killing him was a former marine who suffered from ptsd. our pentagon correspondent barbara starr joins me by phone. barbara, you've been dicking into this. what more do you know? >> this sad story emerged late last night, randi. the pentagon is trying to assemble what they can at this point about the service record of chris kyle and the man taken into custody, 25 years old. he was caught by police in texas after a brief pursuit, has been arraigned on two counts of capital murder. another man was shot along with chris kyle at t

'm victor blackwell. randi kaye is off today. it's 10:00 on the east coast. 7:00 out west. first, traveling in the northeast today could test anyone's patience. a winter storm is about to blast new england with up to a foot of snow in some places. meteorologist karen mcginnis is tracking the storm for us. karen, this is too much. i mean, three weekends in a row. >> it is too much. and folks in boston know this all too well because already this month they've seen 32 inches of snow this month alone. there's going to be a few more inches probably piled up on top of that. but the record was set back ten years ago, 2003. and they saw more than 41 inches in just one month. this area of low pressure, it begins to develop off the mid-atlantic coast. starts to pull away from the coast of the northeast. but on the back side of this, still enough cold air, still enough moisture to produce probably what will be two to four additional inches of snow/ice. probably because the local forecasters in boston and even some of the more global reports are indicating we could see maybe a couple of inches, could b
